Academic background

Dr. Mtei academic background covers areas of agronomy, soil science and environmental science. He holds BSc. in Agronomy (Sokoine University of Agriculture), MSc in Environmental Science (University of Dar es salaam),

Postgraduate Diploma in Biosafety in Plant Biotechnology (University of Ghent) and PhD in Agricultural Sciences (University of Bonn).

Current research endeavors:

Dr. Mtei’s research interests target the SDG 2 with focus on SDGs 1, 6, 7 and 13 which further addresses the national and NMAIST research agenda theme 1 (Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security) through issues of Sustainable farming systems, Pollution in soils and agro-products, Land/soil reclamation and socio-ecological niche approach to agro-technology transfer; and theme 5 (Water security and sustainability) through issues of Agricultural Water Management and nutrient recovery.Dr. Mtei has established a research group named “Agro-environment” currently with 10 PhD and 12 MSc researchers addressing the themes mentioned above. Specifically, the current research topics are in areas of; Sustainable Farming/Conservation Agriculture, Soil quality/health management, water resources management, air pollution, Agro-ecological intensification, efficient and effective irrigation, waste water re-use for irrigation, nutrients recovery from waste water, soil pollution assessment, soil erosion fingerprinting and Socio-ecological approach for agro-technology transfer.

He is currently a co- Principal investigator in five collaborative projects/grants related to sustainable farming system (VLI/IUC), reclamation of polluted soils (EU Horizon 2020), Agro-ecological intensification (McKnight foundation), Soil erosion control (NERC-DFID) and combatting deforestation (COSTECH).Furthermore, he has done a number of consultancies in the areas of food security, environmental conservation, and socio-ecological aspects of sustainable farming systems. Dr. Mtei’s immense research experience has produced more than 60 publications in peer reviewed journals as can be seen in his google scholar page

Career experience

Dr. Mtei is an experienced researcher and academician for about fifteen years working with various academic and research institutions. He joined NMAIST in July 2012 as a lecturer in the department of Water and Environmental Sciences. In academics, Dr. Mtei has been responsible to deliver lectures in courses related to environmental pollution, sustainable farming systems, soil health, irrigation agronomy and environmental assessment. He has supervised to successful completion (graduation) 4 PhDs and 13 MScs and currently co-supervising 10 PhD and 13 MSc students
